States Squandered Tobacco Settlement

That's the headline from the msnbc site at http://www.msnbc.com/news/838728.asp?0cv=CB10

Think about it. We're talking money here. Yeah, I know you know, but think about this. They get the money twice, and as any business owner knows, it's not the money you get now, it's the money you get tomorrow, next week, next month, next year and so on.

Here's how. They get these big beautiful settlements, don't spend the money on any health programs that they say they will, and then they grab more at the cash register through state cigarette sales taxes. Why would they want to get people to stop smoking? Once they see the bucks that cigs bring in, every politician probably caves and accepts the necessary evil.

I can't prove what I've said, but I bet that If I did the numbers we would see what became of the tobacco money won through the lawsuits.

Here is one small section from that link in case it went down for some reason:

Last year, the 10 states with the highest lung cancer rates received an average of more than $29 per person in settlement funds and the Centers for Disease Control recommended they spend about $7 per person on tobacco-control programs, the study said.
Instead, lawmakers in those states, which include several in the South, allocated an average of a little less than $2 on tobacco-control programs, according to the study released Thursday.
States got an average of nearly $164 million, yet allocated just 6 percent for tobacco control, the study said. That ended up being less than half the CDC-recommended level of $7.47 per person.

Arabs

When I say "Arabs" I am referring to Arab dictators unless otherwise specified. Those dictators rule their nations and only provide information to their people via propaganda. I have met and know plenty of decent Arab and Persian people, and do not have a gripe against those people. My gripe is with the dictators that rule their nations. Simple point of fact is that if they had elections things would eventually change. Sure, in the short term they would elect some maniacle leaders again, but in the long term they would want more freedom and a more decent standard of living.

When we as American people have disagreements we may shout it out or debate things to try to solve them, but we do so peacefully, despite the passion of our debates. Other countries have their own unique ways of dealing with disagreements. The call of the religious leaders in the Arab nations to kill all Jews, Christians and non-believers is their reality and how they solve disagreements. Many Arab people say that the Muslim faith is a faith of peace, but they have to face the facts that there are extreme people in control of their countries who don't share their "peaceful" thoughts.

Here are a couple of statements that I have copied and pasted from a couple of sites. The first is from http://www.fas.org/irp/world/para/docs/980223-fatwa.htm and is the statement from Bin Laden. I will seperate the articles with ------------------------------- for those of you who need to find the ends of these things so that you can move on if you don't want to read it all.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FAS Note: The following statement from Usama bin Laden and his associates purports to be a religious ruling (fatwa) requiring the killing of Americans, both civilian and military. This document is part of the evidence that links the bin Laden network to the September 11 terrorist attacks on New York and Washington. The original Arabic text of this statement may be found here.

Jihad Against Jews and Crusaders
World Islamic Front Statement

23 February 1998

Shaykh Usamah Bin-Muhammad Bin-Ladin
Ayman al-Zawahiri, amir of the Jihad Group in Egypt
Abu-Yasir Rifa'i Ahmad Taha, Egyptian Islamic Group
Shaykh Mir Hamzah, secretary of the Jamiat-ul-Ulema-e-Pakistan
Fazlur Rahman, amir of the Jihad Movement in Bangladesh

Praise be to Allah, who revealed the Book, controls the clouds, defeats factionalism, and says in His Book: "But when the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay the pagans wherever ye find them, seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war)"; and peace be upon our Prophet, Muhammad Bin-'Abdallah, who said: I have been sent with the sword between my hands to ensure that no one but Allah is worshipped, Allah who put my livelihood under the shadow of my spear and who inflicts humiliation and scorn on those who disobey my orders.

The Arabian Peninsula has never -- since Allah made it flat, created its desert, and encircled it with seas -- been stormed by any forces like the crusader armies spreading in it like locusts, eating its riches and wiping out its plantations. All this is happening at a time in which nations are attacking Muslims like people fighting over a plate of food. In the light of the grave situation and the lack of support, we and you are obliged to discuss current events, and we should all agree on how to settle the matter.

No one argues today about three facts that are known to everyone; we will list them, in order to remind everyone:

First, for over seven years the United States has been occupying the lands of Islam in the holiest of places, the Arabian Peninsula, plundering its riches, dictating to its rulers, humiliating its people, terrorizing its neighbors, and turning its bases in the Peninsula into a spearhead through which to fight the neighboring Muslim peoples.

If some people have in the past argued about the fact of the occupation, all the people of the Peninsula have now acknowledged it. The best proof of this is the Americans' continuing aggression against the Iraqi people using the Peninsula as a staging post, even though all its rulers are against their territories being used to that end, but they are helpless.

Second, despite the great devastation inflicted on the Iraqi people by the crusader-Zionist alliance, and despite the huge number of those killed, which has exceeded 1 million... despite all this, the Americans are once against trying to repeat the horrific massacres, as though they are not content with the protracted blockade imposed after the ferocious war or the fragmentation and devastation.

So here they come to annihilate what is left of this people and to humiliate their Muslim neighbors.

Third, if the Americans' aims behind these wars are religious and economic, the aim is also to serve the Jews' petty state and divert attention from its occupation of Jerusalem and murder of Muslims there. The best proof of this is their eagerness to destroy Iraq, the strongest neighboring Arab state, and their endeavor to fragment all the states of the region such as Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Sudan into paper statelets and through their disunion and weakness to guarantee Israel's survival and the continuation of the brutal crusade occupation of the Peninsula.

All these crimes and sins committed by the Americans are a clear declaration of war on Allah, his messenger, and Muslims. And ulema have throughout Islamic history unanimously agreed that the jihad is an individual duty if the enemy destroys the Muslim countries. This was revealed by Imam Bin-Qadamah in "Al- Mughni," Imam al-Kisa'i in "Al-Bada'i," al-Qurtubi in his interpretation, and the shaykh of al-Islam in his books, where he said: "As for the fighting to repulse [an enemy], it is aimed at defending sanctity and religion, and it is a duty as agreed [by the ulema]. Nothing is more sacred than belief except repulsing an enemy who is attacking religion and life."

On that basis, and in compliance with Allah's order, we issue the following fatwa to all Muslims:

The ruling to kill the Americans and their allies -- civilians and military -- is an individual duty for every Muslim who can do it in any country in which it is possible to do it, in order to liberate the al-Aqsa Mosque and the holy mosque [Mecca] from their grip, and in order for their armies to move out of all the lands of Islam, defeated and unable to threaten any Muslim. This is in accordance with the words of Almighty Allah, "and fight the pagans all together as they fight you all together," and "fight them until there is no more tumult or oppression, and there prevail justice and faith in Allah."

This is in addition to the words of Almighty Allah: "And why should ye not fight in the cause of Allah and of those who, being weak, are ill-treated (and oppressed)? -- women and children, whose cry is: 'Our Lord, rescue us from this town, whose people are oppressors; and raise for us from thee one who will help!'"

We -- with Allah's help -- call on every Muslim who believes in Allah and wishes to be rewarded to comply with Allah's order to kill the Americans and plunder their money wherever and whenever they find it. We also call on Muslim ulema, leaders, youths, and soldiers to launch the raid on Satan's U.S. troops and the devil's supporters allying with them, and to displace those who are behind them so that they may learn a lesson.

Almighty Allah said: "O ye who believe, give your response to Allah and His Apostle, when He calleth you to that which will give you life. And know that Allah cometh between a man and his heart, and that it is He to whom ye shall all be gathered."

Almighty Allah also says: "O ye who believe, what is the matter with you, that when ye are asked to go forth in the cause of Allah, ye cling so heavily to the earth! Do ye prefer the life of this world to the hereafter? But little is the comfort of this life, as compared with the hereafter. Unless ye go forth, He will punish you with a grievous penalty, and put others in your place; but Him ye would not harm in the least. For Allah hath power over all things."

Almighty Allah also says: "So lose no heart, nor fall into despair. For ye must gain mastery if ye are true in faith."

"Bin-Ladin, al-Zawahiri, Rifa'i Taha Issue Fatwa To 'Kill Americans Everywhere' in Retaliation for Threats To Strike Iraq; Saddam-Annan Meeting Produces Agreement, Washington Voices Reservations Pending Details"

London, Amman, Washington, Al-Quds al- 'Arabi -- [passage omitted on reports of agreement reached during Annan-Saddam meeting] At another level, a number of fundamentalist groups leaders have issued a statement in which they issued a fatwa to "kill the Americans, civilians and military," in retaliation for any U.S. attack on Iraq.

The text of the fatwa -- contained in a statement faxed to Al- Quds al-'Arabi and signed by Shaykh Usamah Bin-Muhammad Bin-Ladin (the prominent Saudi oppositionist); Ayman al-Zawahiri, amir of the Jihad Group in Egypt; Abu-Yasir Rifa'i Ahmad Taha, a leader of the [Egyptian] Islamic Group; Shaykh Mir Hamzah, secretary of the Jamiat-ul-Ulema-e-Pakistan; and Fazlul Rahman, amir of the Jihad Movement in Bangladesh -- says that the ruling to kill the Americans and their allies, civilians and military, is an individual duty [fard 'ayn] on every Muslim who can do so in any country in which it is possible to do it, in order to liberate the al-Aqsa Mosque and the holy mosque [Mecca] from their grip, and in order that their armies move out of all the land of Islam defeated and unable to threaten any Muslim in compliance with the words of Almighty God "Fight the pagans all together as they fight you all together."

Justifying the call to kill U.S. civilians and military men, the statement said that "U.S. aggression is affecting Muslim civilians, not just the military."

Editor's Note on the word "fatwa": it means judgement

Mr. Bin Laden has been involved in the declaration several "fatwas." He allegedly uses this these fatwas to justify his "holy war" or "Jihad" against America and her allies.

According to the Islamic science called "Usul al-fiqh" (Principles of Jurisprudence), a fatwa is binding when these four conditions are satisfied:

1) It is in line with relevant legal proofs, deducted from Koranic verses and hadiths; 2) It is issued by a person (or a board) having due knowledge and sincerity of heart; 3) It is free from individual opportunism, and not depending on political servitude; 4) It is adequate with the needs of the contemporary world.

OSAMA BIN LADEN THREATENS THE U.S. ON AMERICAN TELEVISION
By Steve Macko, ERRI Risk Analyst

WASHINGTON (EmergencyNet News) - A terrorist financier wanted by Saudi Arabian and U.S. authorities for at least two bombings appeared on U.S. network television on Wednesday and challenged the U.S. military to try to capture him. Appearing on ABC News' "World News Tonight" and later on "Nightline," Osama bin Laden spoke from what it said was a heavily-armed camp somewhere inside Afghanistan, which has given refuge to the stateless Saudi Arabian and a group of his followers.

The slight and bearded bin Laden appeared in a poorly-lit tent and said he was ready if U.S. forces attempted to track him down and arrest him.

The terrorist challenged, "Whether they try or not, we have seen in the last decade the decline of the American government and the weakness of the American soldier."

Bin Laden has vowed to wage a jihad or holy war against U.S. forces in Saudi Arabia because of U.S. support for Israel. He broadened his threat to include all Americans, military and civilian, in the Middle East.

He said, "We do not differentiate between those dressed in military uniforms and civilians. They are all targets in this fatwa (a religious decree) ... we must use such punishment to keep your evil away from Moslems, Moslem women and children."

The U.S. State Department has identified bin Laden as a major world sponsor of Islamic extremism. He is believed to have been a major financier of the two terrorist bombings in Saudi Arabia.

The terrorist said, "We predict a black day for America."

U.S. National Security Advisor Sandy Berger told ABC News in their report, "Osama bin Laden may be the most dangerous non-state terrorist in the world."

U.S. STATE DEPARTMENT NEWS

N.AFRICA-MIDDLE EAST-S.ASIA

WASHINGTON (EmergencyNet News) - On 12 June, the U.S. Department of State issued the following Public Announcement in regards to the Middle East and South Asia:

"In a recent interview with an American news organization, terrorist financier Osama Bin Laden reiterated his threats against the U.S. In an apparent reference to Americans, he said that he did not distinguish between military and civilians -- both groups are targets. In a May 26 press conference, Bin Laden implied that some type of terrorist action could be mounted within the next several weeks. The U.S. continues to receive information from other sources which indicates planning for an attack against Americans in the Persian Gulf (also referred to as the Arabian Gulf). We take these threats seriously and the U.S. is increasing security at many U.S. Government facilities in the Middle East and South Asia.

Therefore, the Department of State believes it useful to remind Americans in the region to maintain a high level of vigilance and alertness and to take appropriate steps to increase their security awareness and lessen their vulnerability. Americans should try to maintain a low profile, reduce travel in the region where possible, vary routes and times for all required travel, and treat mail from unfamiliar sources with suspicion.

This Public Announcement replaces the June 2 Public Announcement on the Middle East and South Asia and expires August 31, 1998."

Meet my “Buddies”

Since we are made up of millions of organisms, in the future to be referred to as buddies, our buddies can control what we want to do or what we think we want to do.

How many times do I say to myself that I am going to do something and then don’t do it?

I’m going to lose weight today...yeah right, my buddies say, maybe tomorrow, that candy bar looks awful good!

Quit smoking..drinking, drugs?? Yeah right, the buddies say “not now, maybe tomorrow or some other year.

Time to exercise, okay, so why am I just looking at the weights, thinking that staring at them somehow exercises my body?

Why do I think negative thoughts? Why don’t I do things when I’m supposed to? What is it that makes me either feel pain or not feel it?

My buddies have a lot to do with it all.

I look at it like momentum, or lets say the conservation of energy. Objects in motion tend to stay in motion.

Here’s how that works with my buddies. Let’s say I think negative thoughts constantly. My buddies develop that direction of thought flow over time. The motion of my being takes on the flow and I become a negative person over time. Little by little my person takes on the negativity. Mild sadness at first, followed by mild depression. This develops into full blown depression and eventually many other forms of mental illnesses, like psychosis, schizophrenia, many others and yes, eventually insanity.

Why would my buddies want me to go insane? They don’t, they don’t want anything. I control them, everything about them and everything they do, for or against me. That means that they are like drones, waiting for the next order to tell them what to do.

How much can my buddies influence the overall way of my life? Think of it like a chain of events, not just one thing that they do. For instance, if I start to drink more, I meet people that drink more, I go to places that encourage more drinking and I start to make more time in my life to drink. I might even attribute the desire to drink to things that happen to me on a day to day basis. Reasons to drink could include happiness, anger, sadness and many other emotions. In order to make sure that I am consuming alcohol regularly I would instigate events that perpetuate the recurrence of those emotions that stimulate the desire to have a drink. More and more my life would evolve around drinking and the things that I do that supports it.

Let’s throw a curve into it. Let’s say that now I meet someone that smokes pot and they encourage me to try it. After all, I drink, and smoking pot isn’t as bad as drinking, so they say. Now another drug enters into the confusion. More behavior changes to justify the consumption of it. One thing leads to another and after not much time at all my buddies will be in control of my entire existence just so that they can try to keep up the status quo of their needs.

They say that alcoholism is a disease. This gives it the status of something you “catch” not do to yourself. Others say that it is inherited, in that way it also gives it the status of something that I couldn’t do anything about. I can just say, “it’s my parents fault” and smugly shrug off responsibility for my own actions.

If I don’t understand what it is that I am saying to my buddies it will appear as if they are controlling me. It will appear as if I am losing my mind and my control over myself.

I used to think that I could just think of something that I wanted or needed to do and I would do it. Seems simple enough, after all, it is my mind, I’m in control, why shouldn’t I be able to do things that seem so basic to most people.

I know now that my buddies take some time to adjust to the things that I want or need to do. I have to first think the right thoughts and then follow through on them. It might take a few tries or more until they are turned in the direction that I want them to go in. That’s why alcoholics don’t usually succeed on quitting drinking until about 5 or 6 tries later.

How many people are driven to madness on a daily basis because of something as simple as not eating that donut, or not smoking that cigarette, or not taking that drug. As simple as? I’d get smacked by most people for saying that!!

If I say lift your hand, go ahead, do it. Easy enough? Think back to when you were a baby. Okay, so you probably can’t remember that. Most likely when you were a baby and wanted to lift your hand and touch an object you couldn’t do it. You hadn’t synchronized the actions of your desires with your buddies yet. Slowly but surely after repeated attempts you got closer and closer to your goals until you succeeded. Rudimentary actions at first, moving the hands or arms where you want them to go followed up by grasping an object and so on.

In those early days my brain had to figure out how to manipulate my buddies. Millions of organisms having to figure things out one step at a time.

This is not to say that I am not responsible for my actions. I have to make the decisions, to quit drugs, smoking, doing the wrong things, start doing the right things and so on.

I just need to be aware that there is more to this than meets the eye. Why else does it take so many tries for so many of us to accomplish goals that we set out to achieve? If I say I am going to get up early in the morning I should be able to do that without a second thought. Anyone that knows me though will see that statement and chuckle.

I am not alone. My buddies become accustomed to something, and if I change that they want it back. So to really make a change I either have to be totally committed from the start or I need to keep trying over and over until my buddies give up and say “okay okay, you win, we give up!”.

I imagine that this could be related to my theory of all electric. My buddies could be simple organisms that become accustomed to a certain polarity and when that polarity changes they want things back to the status quo so they send signals to the brain to cease and desist whatever it is that we are doing that makes things difficult and opposite to them.

How are we able to get rid of pain and illnesses? It could be our buddies unifying to overcome what we perceive as pain. With a complete connection from our minds to our buddies we can cure anything, such as:

> cancer
> diabetes
> stroke
> joint pain
> heart problems
> overcome all addictions
> overcome depression and all mental illnesses

Other possibilities include hyper learning, enhanced senses, clairvoyance and many other special powers.

I believe that when we truly harmonize our buddies with Jesus, that is when we will have tapped into the secrets of the universe. Jesus said “for all that I have done you can do and more”. That means walking on water, curing illnesses, healing the sick and more. In the scheme of things in life I’m sure that those types of things are just parlor tricks compared to what God has in store for us.

(Person from book that I borrowed from Lynn) said that the cravings for food can be like the desire for crack. When we look at the many things that people can have a desire for it really makes sense. Why is a person willing to forsake his or her family for the desires of drugs, food, alcohol, sex, theft, smoking, anger, exercise or any other type of behavior influencing attacker?

It seems that it is natural for us to have behavioral patterns of many kinds and that explains why many people have obsessive compulsive behavior. Think of a girl twirling her hair, or a person that touches the same part of their face over and over and you can tell that by the pimples. Some people tap their foot, others roll their fingers, some crack their knuckles, some bite their cheeks.

With the number of patterns and quirks that we can have it’s amazing that we can sit still for one minute!

I’ve lived with quirks since I can remember thinking. As a young child of 4 or so I remember that I had difficulty sleeping. I remember crying and being upset and rocking my head back and forth until I fell asleep. Ever heard of counting sheep? Another pattern.

In the 70s I was addicted to every kind of downer, upper or sideways drug that there was. Alcohol, cigarettes, I always had something that kept me busy.

It seems as if whatever we feed our buddies the more they want. It gets to a point where we get overwhelmed by our quirks. As an OC person I’ve spent my life trying to figure out how to stop all of the behaviors and addictions that I piled on.

Chaotic behavior that results from the confusion caused by our seemingly uncontrollable behavior doesn’t only breed bad. Look at many of the popular and famous artists, writers, musicians and so on. Jim Morrison, Janis, Edgar Allan Poe, Van Gogh. so many of them living with addiction, depression anxiety and whatever other psychological dysfunctions. We wind up with beautiful art, catchy music that shapes generations and gripping stories that peak the imagination.

If these people were given the chance to change their lives by not having the difficulties that they had to suffer through all or most of their lives would they have taken it? Does the inspiration come from the chaos and suffering or would these people be naturally inspired? I believe the later, just in a different way.

I know that while I was in my constant state of psychological struggle I thought that I was inspired by it, as if the struggle was enhancing my ability to come up with ideas, photographs and whatever other projects I was working on. I know now that I can do 10 times the projects that I did back then. I’m sure that some of the creativity that I had vanished. I guess you can think of the chaos as a sort of watered down paintbrush that threw a bit of randomness into everything.

Why don’t drug and alcohol rehabs work? Because they treat the addictions as a disease or a family condition. Some will point to the abuse as a symptom of psychological problems.

If you look at it in the way that we create the symptoms in order to continue what we do, it is much more realistic. If we don’t learn early on that we need to think about everything that we do because it will influence us somehow we will become slaves to our “buddies”. Talk about friends not being good for you!

I once said to a friend, “be careful what you look at”. You have to treat your mind as if it is a precious object that shouldn’t be shown things that are not good for it. We take in information like computers and process it, and in the computer world we have a saying, GIGO, garbage in, garbage out.

We need to stop thinking of ourselves as victims of society and start thinking of ourselves as victims or ourselves. To get rid of the excuse factor in life will return us our own sanity because we will know that being happy is something that we control, every second of every minute of every hour of…well, you get the point. 

How I speak with people determines how they speak to me. Treat others as we wish to be treated. How I think about myself determines how much confidence I will have. What I think about will shape my future so I need to take my thoughts seriously.

Do people in lower income areas have a lesser chance of being successful in the world because of that condition? We have heard many times of individuals making it out of the slums and into the big time. What made them different from all the others? Some will say, connections got them there, or they got lucky, or even “they were in the right place at the right time”. First of all they couldn’t have been in that place in the first place if they didn’t believe that they could change their lives, or put their lives on a track that they controlled. How can you be in the right place if you never get up?

Money, better schools, more books, better teachers, none of that stuff will make a better society. What does make a better society is when we learn to take personal responsibility for our actions on a continuous basis.

Someone asks me for help, how do I respond? How did I sound when I responded? If I sounded as if it was a big deal & that I was going out of my way to help them then I am not doing me or mankind a favor. I do for others because it is the right thing to do. If others offer me help of if I need help from others I need to be aware that they might not want to help me all the time. Maybe I need to do something for them once in a while to show my gratitude for what they do for me.

What and how I say things to my son and daughter is taken in. I do things for and with them because I want to and enjoy doing things for and with them.

If I am not in the mood to do something I need to decide if my mood is more important or how many times I am not in the mood. Sometimes I need to change my mood and sometimes I need to politely decline. Figuring out which to do when is a challenge, but as long as I am working on what is right, not just for me but for others, I will continue to grow and do the right thing. I probably won’t always do the right thing but as long as I am working on being a good person, to myself and others I will do the right thing more as life goes on. If I make a mistake, I will learn from it, not beat myself up for it.

We should be able to live with nothing and help each other and be kind to each other. The “haves” and “have nots” aren’t what shape us, how we look at each other is. Every situation in our lives is a sort of test because we have to act or respond. Am I proactive or reactive? I have the opportunity to create my world around me one day at a time. By treating people properly, over time they will enjoy my company and get to know me better.

Nothing changes right away. Look at it like a ship on the ocean. When a captain wants to navigate from America to England he has to know ahead of time where the rocks, ice, currents and bad weather are. That is being proactive. The captain of the Titanic was reactive and look what happened to him!

If we learn at an early age how to respond to emotional situations we become capable of developing a proactive personality. One that is able to handle the difficulties, frustrations and general day to day situations.

It comes down to this, what we do we will want to do more of. It doesn’t matter if it is good or bad for us. Our patterns of thoughts need to be understood and controlled to maintain emotional stability.

We need to educate our children to understand this concept. If we can help them build strength of mind by teaching them calm rational behavior they won’t fall prey to the many painful distractions.

For people that are already on the wrong path we need to redirect them. Mind Control!!! Yeah, that’s what people will say. They will get up on the chairs and holler how we’re trying to churn out a bunch of lemmings.

That is not the case. There is nothing wrong with coming up with “Standards of Decency”. It can be voted on and written up over time and available for all to see how it is we should behave in life.

We teach English, Math, Sex Education and even about homosexuality, why shouldn’t we teach decency? You say that it is something that should be left to the parents? Well what if the problem is that the parents don’t know what to teach either? It’s like my daughter coming at me with homework on subjects that have expanded beyond my knowledge since I went to school. I haven’t learned it so I can’t teach it to her.

Your decency might be different from my decency? That’s possible, but since I am not trying to teach morals it shouldn’t matter. Do we need to teach moral behavior? Of course we do, but that’s not what this is about. This particular project should be about changing and adjusting our behavior so that we treat each other properly as fellow human beings. So this brand of decency training would include the following:

Kindness – many forms of this, they include:
• How do we treat our parents?
• How do we treat a store clerk
• As a store clerk how would we treat a customer
• ********
Coping – emotional situations would include:
• ********
Work – work ethic would involve:
• A job worth doing is worth doing well
• Is it just a job or a representation of myself?
Cleanliness
• Do I keep my area clean. I’m not talking about clutter, I’m plenty guilty of that, but clean., such as the bathroom and kitchen.
• Do I pick up trash when I see it?
• Do I throw things out of the window of a car or out a boat?

It doesn’t just end there so it couldn’t just be a “decency” class so I will have to figure out another name and flow since there are other things that have to be learned. Here are a few more:

Compulsive behavior
• Do I bite my nails
• Do I touch my face constantly
• Bit my lip, cheek
• Tap my foot
• Roll my fingers
• Crack my knuckles
• Groan a lot
• Sigh a lot
• Abuse Alcohol
• Abuse drugs or any other substance
• Argue
• Fight/squabble

Protect your Mind

I just saw Femme Fatale, well, part of it anyway. When Rebecca Romijn-Stamos decides to watch a distraught woman blow her head off I walked out. I have to admit I don’t know if she really did it, but here’s how it set up.

Rebecca Romijn-Stamos played a part in a robbery where she wound up taking the goods and ditching her cohorts. When trying to get a passport so that she could leave France one of the guys she ditched was there waiting for her. (I’m sure that she plays both parts of the women in this movie, but when I mention her name I’m referring to the main character)

Here’s the first totally stupid moment. Nah, there were others but lets start with this one. The necklace that they stole was supposed to be worth $10 Million. This guy throws her over the balcony while pressing her for the info on where they money/necklace is. I don’t know about you, but until I got an answer I wouldn’t toss the only person that knows where it is to the buzzards!

She falls 60 or so feet, plows through glass and then lands on some insulation or something like that. But what a surprise, upon awakening she’s just fine, only a little shook up.

Now a twist comes in. She is in a French woman’s house whose husband and child died somehow. The parents (husband & wife I think..don’t know) are there giving her tea and consoling her. They quiz her about a gun that was missing, of course worried that she was going to blow her head off. They leave and now Rebecca Romijn-Stamos walks around and slowly figures out that these folks think that she is her daughter because except for the hair, she just happens to look just like her.

And on to the walk out moment. There she is, chill’n and enjoying her new life and taking a bath. Then the real daughter walks in from the pouring rain, totally distraught from the deaths of her husband and child. This woman doesn’t see her in the tub, she’s too busy crying and losing it as any sane person would do.

Rebecca Romijn-Stamos looks at this person with momentary empathy, but as she sees her writing up a farewell note she seems to almost take the thought of that with glee. She jumps back into the closet as the woman comes back into the room with a gun. She chambers a round and proceeds to play Russian roulette. The first click caused an apparent moment of queasiness in what she was watching. The second click, ok, so I just closed my eyes.

I knew it wasn’t going to be just a click. The gun went off and I’m assuming she blew her head off. I just wasn’t willing to sit through Hollywood’s desire to make things look real nowadays and see her brains fly against the wall. Did it really happen? I’m sure it did, but I wasn’t willing to watch it. The next scene I saw was Rebecca Romijn-Stamos boarding a plane with the other woman’s ticket to America.

I got up and walked out.

Earlier in the movie, Rebecca Romijn-Stamos was French kissing a woman that she was robbing, and then when one of the other robbers was ready to shoot her Rebecca Romijn-Stamos saved the woman.

So it was silly to think that she would watch a woman suffering from anguish blow her head off without helping out. Not only that, the inhumanity of that moment freaked me out. She was willing to let brains fly so she could grab a passport and plane ticket.

I have one important saying that I want people to think about.

Protect your mind

It’s all you have. We pollute it with various silly things, but we really need to protect our minds from horror and complete impropriety.

I know, my idea of horror and impropriety might not be yours, but what’s happening in society is not what I believe what humanity wants to happen. Gore and sex have taken on new meanings. It order to titillate and shock us, Hollywood and the media have to turn to ever greater extremes. Over time and exposure to the constant drum of sex and violence we expect more in order for it to have an effect.

Desensitization can be a problem if we’re not aware of it happening. It takes over as a new identity. We think that we remain the same but we don’t, we become something new every time we’re affected/infected with this new, inserted stream of thought.

To get an idea of how we get used to things, I head that in Mexico, women rub hot sauce into their screaming babies’ mouths to get them used to it. Some might call it cruel, but from what I understand, to them it is perfectly normal and helps the baby adapt to their food.

True or not, the fact remains that our minds work that way. The first time we’re exposed to something we’re not used to and might find objectionable we are uncomfortable. Repeated exposure causes us to experience not only a lack of effect from the event, but we now find that we can handle more, and in a way we desire more.

Of course this analysis goes along with my “Buddies” theory. We get them in motion, and in the case of desensitization it is hard if not almost impossible to turn them around.
